BE YOUR OWN LAWYER

Empowering You to Represent Yourself

AI – The Trap to Avoid…. or at least be very wary of!

So you’ve read about potential problems with Artificial Intelligence, but at this point you’re probably thinking that it’s a bunch of BS.

I can almost read your thoughts: “This guy doesn’t want people using AI because if they do, they won’t need to use Be Your Own Lawyer.

Let me start by assuring you, that nothing could be less true. At Be Your Own Lawyer we like AI… we get a lot of our clients as a result of using AI and having to clean up the mess.

But since I’m sure skeptics will abound, let’s take this article and see exactly how messed up a case can get when someone that doesn’t understand the shortcomings and limitations of large language models.

This lady contacted Be Your Own Lawyer for help with her case last fall. She had run into a roadblock because she had tried to file her “case” in federal district court where before a case can be filed, the filer must certify that the documents were not generated by artificial intelligence.

That’s right – courts are getting tired of dealing with the nonsense that AI platforms generate. Luckily for the client, that was the end of her endeavor because indeed, every piece of paper that she was trying to filehad been generated by and AI platform called Nayayam. This platform, which you can visit here touts itself as The Legal Platform Democraticizing Justice. Not only is this an AI platform along the lines of ChatGPT and others, it touts itself as having particular expertise in legal matters.

So, how effective is this platform? I’ll let you be the judge. We were provided with the “pleadings” that this platform created and represented as “ready to file”. Feel free to read and enjoy. Here’s the link:

To understand why we’re not impressed with these “pleadings”, you have to understand the underlying case.

It began as a routine traffic stop which the “client” for reasons known only to her managed to escalate to a confrontation, arrest, and the addition of numerous other criminal charges. She had decided her future was not looking very promising in the state criminal court system, and began exploring her options. This AI platform had her convinced that since she did not believe she was going to fare well in state court, that she should “remove” her case to federal court.

Spoiler alert: in the circumstances of this case there is no way that it would have been possible to remove this case to federal court!!

I’m going to pause this narrative here. If you want to get an understanding of the pitfalls of AI, explore the platform and scan over the case materials that were generated. Don’t be overwhelmed… a lot of it is repetitive and gibberish, but it will give you an idea of what this lady was presented with.

In the next article I’ll dissect the product in a little more detail.
